Children & Podiatry
12 months: Childrens feet at 12 months are made up of mostly cartilage and has doubled in size since birth.
Kinder: Children should be learning to jump, skip, hop, kick a ball and improve running skills. Shoes should allow protection but still allow freedom and mobility and must have adjustable straps or laces rather than slip on shoes.
School age: Feet take on a grown up appearance and their walking starts to resemble that of an adult. Teaching children to tie up their shoelaces at this age is important. Also keeping their feet clean and dry and wearing thongs around the pool is important to prevent warts, injury and tinea.
Common problems in children include:
- bow legs
- knock knees
- flat feet/pronation
- high arched feet
- metatarsus adducts
- tinea
- warts
- balancing difficulties
- intoeing
